Campus Services has launched a new, sensory map for the Fresh shop on campus.

You can download an accessible PDF version of the map, or view a physical copy in the shop window before you enter.

The map helps support those who find going to unfamiliar places an overwhelming experience. This can be particularly difficult when places are busy, loud and bright, especially for people with sensory differences.

Having information in advance can help you make informed choices and shop in a way that feels best for you.

The map provides a layout of the shop, detailing the location of shopping aisles and sensory information.

Developing the map

The process begun by designing an up-to-date layout and simplified floor plan for Fresh.

A group of neurodiverse students and staff helped to mark the map with various sensory features. They then tested the map and gave feedback on other information that would be useful to include.

Using the map

The map shows information about:

  • sensory features, such as noise and temperature.
  • areas of the shop that get particularly crowded at peak times.
  • aisles where stock rotates often.
  • location of different products across the store.
  • key spots, including queueing areas and tills.

Peak times and quiet hours

The Fresh shop is usually busy at lunch time (11am to 2pm) and early evening (4pm to 6pm).

There are quiet shopping hours during term time, with reduced lighting and noise to make the shop more sensory-friendly:

  • 8pm to 9pm Monday to Friday
  • 11am to 12 noon Saturday
  • 10am to 11am Sunday

Let us know what you think of the map using our feedback form below and if a sensory map could support you in our other campus outlets.

We are grateful to the Disability Action Group and the Staff and PGR Neurodiversity Network for their support with this project.
