The UK Government has issued an Amber Cold-Health Alert for the south-west of the UK, as the low temperatures are likely to affect your health and wellbeing. The alert runs until 9am on Tuesday 14 January 2025.
The forecast weather is likely to have the biggest impact on vulnerable people, such as those with underlying health conditions, and the elderly.
The advice for everyone is to stay warm, and dress appropriately for the weather. If you’re feeling cold at home try not to sit still for too long, and wearing several thin layers is better than one thick layer. Avoid letting your room get damp with laundry or after showering, as a damp room is more difficult to keep warm, and increases the risk of mould.
If possible, please also consider checking on other people you know who may be vulnerable.
If you need a warm place to go, our drop-in Study Spaces include the Library, 10East, and Polden Commons, and the Virgil Building in the city.
If you’re affected by the cost of heating your home, you can read about our Cost of Living support, including other warm spaces in Bath & North East Somerset.
The cold weather also increases the number of infectious diseases, such as flu and norovirus. NHS England has information on how you can manage colds or sore throats yourself, and when you should visit your local pharmacist or GP for advice and treatment. You can search online for details of your nearest pharmacy. You can also contact NHS 111 for advice and support.
