At University of Bath, enabling effective travel to and from our Claverton Down campus is vital to delivering our core goals. Travel arrangements support our students to get to their classes; our staff to their jobs; our visitors to enjoy the campus and participate in the many services and functions that we offer; and our suppliers to deliver their products.
Currently the majority of journeys to and from our campus are taken by bus, and we do much to encourage and support the walkers and cyclists in our community. However, many people also drive to campus.
Since our last Travel Plan in 2016, much has changed in and for our university community. Our ways of working have changed, including flexible working and hybrid learning. We have grown over time as a University and project further growth to come. We're approaching this in a planned and sustainable way but this does put pressure on our space and increases the challenges for all modes of travel and for transport infrastructure.
We need to find ways in which we can balance the requirements of those who need to drive whilst encouraging others to use alternatives modes. Indeed, the University has set out ambitious goals on health, wellbeing and climate change, and these compel us to rethink how we enable travel to and from the campus, reduce emissions, and improve local air quality.
As an anchor institute, the University needs to act as a leader, taking action to limit its impact. However, we recognise the need to work and influence beyond our campus, and beyond our direct responsibility, working with other local organisations, and partners including the Council and public transport providers.
Developing a new Travel Plan
Read the updated University of Bath Travel Plan.
While we have outlined the areas we intend to work on, we are now engaging our staff and student community about their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours in relation to their commute to campus. We also want to hear from our external community about the impact of travel, including changes to travel patterns, to and from our Claverton Down campus. Your views are important to us.
Data from our internal and external surveys will be reviewed in combination with existing travel data that we've collected. This will help inform decision making about what action will be taken to achieve the targets within the Travel Plan.
