How does ANPR work?
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will read your vehicle registration number plate when you enter and exit the Claverton Down campus. The system checks this number against all those with parking permits.
Parking restrictions apply between 8am and 5pm, seven days a week, excluding public holidays.
If a vehicle is parked without paying or a permit, a parking penalty notice will be sent to the address of the registered keeper in the vehicle's V5 document.
Do I still have to ‘pay-to-park’ in the app if I have an Occasional User permit?
Yes. If you have an Occasional User permit, you will still need to 'pay-to-park' using the app within ten minutes of arriving and parking on campus.
If I pay to park and leave campus during the day, will I need to pay again when I return?
No. If you have paid to park for the whole day, you can leave and return to campus on the same day without paying again.
How will ANPR data be used and stored? Will it simply be to confirm that people entering the car parks have permits, or will other things be measured?
The ANPR data is anonymous, it only records the car registration plate details and matches this against permit or pay-to-park information. This data is processed by First Parking, an external company and the University's parking management provider. The University does not have access to personal details of vehicle owners through the ANPR system. You can read more about data use in our CCTV Code of Practice.
Will reserved parking spaces (other than those for people with disabilities) be removed?
There are currently no plans to remove the reserved spaces.
Will I be charged for parking if I am just dropping off or picking someone up?
Between 8am and 5pm, a one-hour grace period will be available for vehicles that are not parking; for example, if you're loading or waiting.
Do I get a penalty if I have to drive around several different car parks to find a space?
No, the cameras only record your time of arrival and time of leaving on the whole of campus.
What do I do if I’m using a different car for the day?
If you’re using a different car than recorded on your permit, you will need to visit the online permit system and update your vehicle details ahead of arriving on campus. Notes left on vehicle windscreens will not register with the ANPR cameras. When you no longer need the temporary vehicle registered, please remove it from your account.
What happens if the camera can’t read my number plate?
ANPR technology is highly accurate, but sometimes factors can blur vehicle's registration image so the camera can’t read it clearly. If you believe a parking charge notice has been issued in error, please contact Security, who can investigate.
