Our next Language Café is taking place on Thursday 22 October 2026, from 13.00 to 14.00 in Polden Café. Whether you’re just starting out are or already confident in another language, this is a chance to practise speaking in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
How the Café works
You’ll join small conversation groups led by volunteers who are fluent or native speakers. Every language has three conversation groups: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. The theme for this session is “arriving and getting to know each other”, offering a gentle way to start conversations and connect with others across the University.
Taking part
You’re encouraged to take part, but there’s no pressure to speak straight away. Feel free to listen in and join when you’re ready. Free tea, coffee and snacks will be available – just remember to bring your own cup.
Booking is required, and you will be asked to indicate the language you wish to practise and your level of proficiency.
Who can join a Language Café
The Language Café is open to all students, staff and alumni. It’s a great way to meet new people, explore different cultures and build confidence in using another language.
Facilitating a group
If you are a fluent or native speaker of another language and would be interested in facilitating a group at the Café, we’d love to hear from you. Please email Carmen Schembri Wismayer if you’d like to find out more. You might also be interested in reading George’s blog post on working with us as a Language Cafe facilitator last year.
How to book a place
You must book your place in advance via MySkills. We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment; the Cafés we ran in 2025-26 sold out.
