Professor Williams worked in the Department of Chemistry where his research focused on the use of transition metals for the synthesis of useful organic molecules. He joined the University in 1996 and was the Head of Department from 2000-2003 and the Deputy Head of Department from 2015-2018.

Professor Andrew Burrows, Head of the Department of Chemistry, said: "We are shocked and saddened by Jon’s untimely death. Jon was a deeply caring and generous colleague who made enormous contributions to all aspects of the department. His research on developing new catalytic processes in organic chemistry was world leading. Many past members of Jon’s group have gone onto successful careers in chemistry, both in academia and industry, and this is testimony to Jon’s enthusiasm and extremely supportive mentorship."

The funeral will be held at 11am on Tuesday 27 August, at The Silk Mill, Frome. The dress code will be smart casual, with the option to wear something blue if desired. Anyone who would like to attend is requested to register either via Eventbrite or by contacting: rsvpwilliamsfamily@gmail.com
