Dr Dick James, currently Director of Doctoral Studies for the Faculty of Science and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Physics, has been appointed Academic Director (Doctoral) and will start the new role on 1 December 2025. He will work closely with Professor Joe Devine, the Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor Research (Doctoral), in leading the development of doctoral education across the University.

Dr Dick James joined the University in 1992 and his research interests lie in the development of methods for the modelling and analysis of biological networks and collective behaviour. He has successfully taken on a number of leadership roles including Head of Department and Director of the Centre for Networks and Collective Behaviour. In 2023 he was appointed Director of Doctoral Studies for the Faculty of Science, and has led colleagues in the implementation of key strategic doctoral initiatives including stronger supervisory support for doctoral researchers, launching numerous research culture initiatives to support both doctoral supervisors and researchers, and overseeing the progression of doctoral researchers throughout their research.
