The University has a range of initiatives in place to support staff and student active travel commuting. You can find out more and see tailored advice on the active travel webpage.

In April, there is a range of events taking place to encourage you to dust off your bike, trainers or walking boots and start travelling more actively for your commute.

In addition to the events listed below, if you are interested to get involved in cycling and would like support, you may be interested to buddy up with a colleague who already does. This can be a great way to discover the best routes, build confidence, and find someone to ride socially with. Via the staff and student Bicycle Users Group you can find a list of cycling buddies for you to contact.

Join a mass cycle ride from Bristol to Bath

On Tuesday 18 April, join colleagues to commute by bike to campus. You can join from Bristol to complete the full route, or there will also be a pick-up point from Bitton. This ride is suitable for all levels of riders and will be completed at the pace of the slowest rider.

For less confident riders, this is a great opportunity to build confidence among a friendly and encouraging group.

If you're new to the area or a returning cyclist, you can join the ride to discover this beautiful route with colleagues who regularly commute.

And for experienced cyclists, you can connect with fellow cyclists and enjoy a more sociable cycling commute.

For anyone unsure about cycling up the final hill to campus, Security will be on hand as emergency support to meet the riding group at the bottom of North Hill and will be able to transport any bikes up the hill if needed, leaving you to either walk or catch a bus.

More details about this ride and the route are available on our Eventbrite page. Anyone that plans to join should book via this page so that we know who to expect on the day.

Join a mass walk from Bath city centre to campus

On Tuesday 18 April, join colleagues to walk either from Oldfield Park or Bath Spa Railway Station to campus, and enjoy a picturesque route via Bathwick meadows.

More details about these walks are available on our Eventbrite page. Anyone that plans to join should book via this page so that we know who to expect on the day.

Staff active travel breakfast

On Tuesday 18 April, walk, run or cycle to campus to enjoy a free breakfast when you arrive to set you up for the day. Provided by Campus Services, this breakfast is also a great opportunity to connect with fellow cyclists and walkers, and share routes, tips and advice.

This breakfast is free but please book on our Eventbrite page so that we know how many people to cater for.

Get cycle ready for summer

On Wednesday 19 April, we're helping you to get ready for a summer of cycling with free events including Dr Bike servicing and repairs and police bike marking.

For anyone interested in cycling but who doesn't yet have a bike, we have a range of options for you at this event:

  • Julian House Bike Workshop will bring a selection of their affordable, refurbished and fully-serviced bikes for anyone interested to purchase one on the day
  • Try out an e-bike and get advice from Take Charge Bikes for anyone considering buying one (staff and postgraduate students can trial an e-bike for two weeks for free)

Find out more about these events taking place on Wednesday 19 April.
