As you may already be aware, there is a global day of action on Friday 20 September, in response to the growing challenge of climate change. The action is being led by young people in schools, colleges and universities, who are inviting people from all generations to join them.

In line with its mission, the University firmly respects scientific evidence and recognises that the need is clear for urgent action across society to tackle dangerous, anthropogenic climate change, from governments and businesses to public sector organisations and charities like universities. This is why the University has committed to developing an ambitious new Climate Action Framework which will build on existing work in this area.

We understand that some staff members may wish to join in peaceful action for 30 minutes on Friday 20 September. Given the exceptional circumstances, the University has decided to allow an additional 30 minutes (over and above the standard lunch break) for those colleagues in non-essential services who wish to join this action.

We request that any disruption to our students, other colleagues, and visitors on campus is minimised. However, we would ask our community’s understanding if there is some interruption to service in retail or hospitality outlets in case staff on rotas wish to join the action.

From a safety perspective, please ensure that no entrances or exits are blocked and that no property is damaged.

We would ask you to speak to your line manager if you intend to take part. Thank you.
