Join the Bath Uni Transport Sharing group on Viva Engage to make it easier to connect with colleagues to arrange car-sharing to campus.

The group is a community request forum, and you can post messages, or respond to colleagues, to request or offer a ride-share to and from work.

Car-sharing your commute has financial, environmental, and social benefits. You may be able to reduce your travel costs of fuel and parking charges by sharing these with passengers, it can help reduce traffic and congestion on our roads, and can ease parking capacity pressures on campus.

The Viva Engage platform is not monitored by HR so please do not provide details of personal information such as phone numbers or addresses. Once you have made inital contact remember to use due diligence; make detailed arrangements via email or Teams, if you haven't met the colleague before you could arrange to initially meet in a public area such as 4 West cafe, and get picked up at a bus stop to avoid sharing your home address. Always tell family or friends if you are going to be sharing a journey with someone else.

You should also ensure your car insurance policy covers car-sharing. The UK Public Passenger Vehicle Act (1981) states that passenger contributions should be arranged before travel, and should not exceed the fuel and running costs (including wear and depreciation) of the vehicle for the trip. As long as you're not making a profit from the trip most insurers state that car sharing will not affect your car insurance.

You can also use a platform such as Liftshare, which calculates a Suggested Contribution per passenger for your journey based on the length of your trip and using HM Revenue and Customs Approved Mileage Payment Allowance.

If you're sharing lifts you can also apply for a Car Share permit, which allows you to use the 12 car share parking spaces in the West and East Car Parks. These spaces are reserved until 10.30am, Monday to Friday.
