The sustainable research hub has been designed to empower our research community to minimise the environmental impacts of conducting research. The hub offers a wealth of information, tips, and resources designed to make it easier for everyone within our research community to implement actions that will ensure practices at Bath are as sustainable as possible, whilst maintaining a clear focus on research quality.

Research plays a critical role in understanding and fighting global sustainability challenges, yet it can also generate significant environmental impacts. The urgency of the climate and biodiversity crises means we must act now and encourage everyone to contribute. In January, the University reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by signing the Concordat for Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation practice.

The hub opens an exciting opportunity to make tangible difference in our research culture at Bath, fostering an environment where sustainability is a priority, and research contributes positively to both scientific progress and our sustainable future. We embark on this transition alongside others in the sector including all GW4 universities.

Richard Jackson, Director of Sustainability shared:

The sustainable research hub is a strong foundation in Bath’s journey towards an embedded sustainable research culture, positioning us alongside others leading in the sector. The development of the guidance and resources has been a collaborative effort with members of our research community to ensure a joined-up approach to represent Bath’s diverse research.

Professor Petra Cameron, Department of Chemistry and core member of the Institute of Sustainability and Climate Change (ISCC), chairing ISCC Sustainability Working Group said:

As researchers, it is our responsibility to maintain excellence in our research practice, this includes taking accountability for the environmental and social impacts of our research and innovation. We can all take measurable action in this area and lead sustainable practice throughout our research.

It is important that our community has the tools and knowledge to maintain world-leading research in an evolving sector. Both internally and externally, there is a growing demand in research for sustainable practices to be a priority. The University is part of the pilot for REF 2029 and sustainability is an important aspect in the People, Culture and Environment section.

Additionally, research funders are increasingly seeking demonstrable sustainability action as part of grant applications. Both Wellcome Trust and Cancer Research UK require labs to be signed up to the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), and other funders now ask for information on the carbon footprint and environmental impact of research practice. The hub provides tools and supporting information to assist in addressing sustainability issues in grant applications.

The diverse set of online guidance and resources will support all members of our research community whilst providing practical actions tailored to specific research needs. The hub launches with important guidance on cross-cutting themes such as energy reduction, responsible purchasing, waste management, travel and lab certification support. We will continually be broadening the range of topics covered and evolve the resources provided.

We encourage members of our research community to explore the new hub and take advantage of the support it offers. Together, we can make a significant impact and stay at the forefront of sustainable research practices.
