Professor of Applied Mathematics Jonathan Dawes has been appointed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as its new Deputy Executive Chair.
Prof Dawes will join EPSRC on 27 February on secondment from the University of Bath. He was co-founder and director from 2015 to 2020 of Bath’s Institute for Mathematical Innovation, and prior to his appointment at Bath in 2009 held posts at Trinity and Newnham Colleges at the University of Cambridge.
Professor Dawes said: “I’m excited to be taking on this role at an important time for the engineering and physical sciences research community as a whole.
“I am particularly looking forward to working with the community to develop our research ecosystem and to respond to the UKRI strategic themes. EPSRC has clear commitments to support curiosity-driven research, mission-led programmes, and the translation of research outcomes into benefits for society. I’m keen to see how we can build on our current success in order to realise the vision for engineering and physical sciences as part of UKRI.”
EPSRC Executive Chair Professor Dame Lynn Gladden said: “I am delighted to welcome Jonathan to EPSRC as our new deputy executive chair. His wide-ranging experience, including in leading cross-discipline collaborations and working with a broad range of partners, will be an important asset to EPSRC and the wider engineering and physical sciences community.”
Professor Dawes was member and then chair of EPSRC’s Strategic Advisory Team for Mathematical Sciences from 2018 to 2021, and a member of the council’s Strategic Advisory Network from 2021 to 2023.
He held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship from 2007 to 2015.
