On your feet Britain is a national awareness day in April, aimed at desk-based workers across the UK. It encourages people to take part in a variety of activities to 'sit less and move more' at work.
To mark the occasion, Simon Brown from the Men’s Network led colleagues on a picturesque countryside walk, taking in Bath scenery and nearby Sham Castle.
Simon said:
It was an amazing walk. We had a great turnout – which made it very social and enjoyable. And the weather was very kind with the sun breaking out halfway around.
Research from the University of Cambridge and Edinburgh amongst others confirmed the range of benefits we can gain from walking. Here are just five from many:
- reducing the risk of developing heart and circulatory diseases and cancer
- helping your balance, which can prevent you from falling and injuring yourself
- slowing bone loss as you age, which can reduce your risk of osteoporosis as walking is a weight-bearing exercise
- helping oxygen and nutrients move around your body, making you feel more alert and refreshed
- releasing natural chemicals that make you feel happy and positive, like serotonin, dopamine and endorphins
Where else can you get all this for free?

We'll be holding another Bath skyline walk to mark National Walking Month on Tuesday 20 May, 12.00 to 13.30.
All are welcome. You'll just need some sturdy footwear and a drink.
