I’ve been at the University for three years and I do numerous jobs within the department. These include teaching undergraduate students, performing research in human physiology and nutrition, and I’m also admission tutor for Health & Exercise Science.
What would you most like to achieve while at the University?
Researching an area I’m interested in was what drew me to an academic career. So over the coming years I’d like to pursue that more and make some more discoveries in the fields of nutrition and metabolism and how that relates to either human health or sports performance.
What piece of advice would you like to give to a student?
Get involved in as much as you can because what you get out of University is mainly driven by what you put into it.
What’s the one thing you know now that you wish you’d known when you were younger?
That hard work really does pay off.
What was your first job?
I cleaned the changing rooms of a local sports club, including the toilets. 6am until 8am on weekdays which was a good start to the day. Thankfully it was mainly just mud.
What’s your favourite book or album and why?
I’m really into popular science books, I don’t read fiction at all so my favourite book is The Drunkard’s Walk by Leonard Mlodinow. It’s all about how random events rule our lives and I feel it can change how you think about the world.
When are you happiest?
When I’m cycling.
What one superpower would you like to possess?
Flight because the views would be amazing and you could get around so much quicker.
If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why?
The cyclist Geraint Thomas. He’s a fantastic cyclist, down to earth and seems like a good guy to go for a drink with.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
Although I’m now about 86 kilos when I was born I only weighed 1kg.
Tell us your favourite joke.
What does the cheese say when it looks in the mirror? Halloumi!
