Cara is a rescue initiative dedicated to supporting academics worldwide who require urgent assistance to escape discrimination, persecution, violence, or conflict. In collaboration with UK universities, Cara offers Fellowships to postgraduate researchers seeking refuge in the UK. A distinctive feature of Cara is its ability to assist scholars directly in their home countries, even before they have reached the UK or applied for asylum.

Cara at the University of Bath

The University of Bath, in partnership with Cara, is currently supporting two Cara Fellows—two promising female academics from Afghanistan and Sudan. Both scholars are engaged in research aimed at improving conditions in their home countries and enhancing the UK's capacity to engage with these regions. Additionally, the University has committed to funding a third Cara Fellow, in response to the crisis in Gaza, and is in the process of identifying a suitable candidate from the region.

If you are working with an academic who feels threatened in their home country, please contact the University’s academic Cara lead, Professor Timo Kivimäki, and we will explore how we can assist.
