Professor Ken Austwick was the founding Head of the School of Education when the University of Bath received its Royal Charter in 1966 and played a central role over many years in the School’s establishment and development. He was a special Professor who was dedicated, highly regarded and inspiring to his colleagues at the University of Bath.
Ken was passionate about the university in his years as Emeritus Professor and joined the Department of Education at the 50th Anniversary Conference in 2017. His name will live on through the Austwick MA Education graduation prize, which exists in recognition of the contribution made by Professor Austwick over many years to the work of the School/Department of Education and the University of Bath more widely.
Professor Jeff Thompson, said, “As Founding Professor and Head of the then School of Education at the University’s launch in 1966, Ken brought to the role huge experience from previous school and university appointments to create a foundation for what was to become, under his expert leadership, a community of teachers and researchers dedicated to linking theory and practice at all levels of education – a characteristic of the Department of Education to the present day.
"After formal retirement he continued, as Emeritus Professor, to take a close interest in the work of both the Department and the University more widely. Ken will be missed by the many staff and students who have reason to be grateful for the guidance and support he generously provided over many years.”
