The Tobacco Control Research Group (TCRG) is pleased to announce that it will be presenting its research at a major international cancer conference. Four members of the group will share their work in sessions at the World Cancer Congress, which will be held in Hong Kong from 24 to 26 September 2026.
The prestigious event, which takes place every two years, is a key opportunity for researchers, clinicians, advocates, policymakers, and people with lived experience to discuss new advances in cancer prevention and treatment. More than 2,500 attendees from over 120 countries are expected to attend the 28th conference.
TCRG researchers will join esteemed colleagues in the tobacco control community as part of the conference’s dedicated theme on tobacco control. They will share their acclaimed work across a range of areas including tobacco industry interference, public health misinformation, and methods for monitoring the tobacco industry. TCRG members have contributed to the World Cancer Congress previously, including speaking in a plenary session and delivering presentations at 2024’s event held in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr Hala Alaouie, Monitoring Coordinator, will deliver a presentation titled ‘Monitoring Interference in Real Time: WHO FCTC COP as a Case Study’ in a session on tobacco industry interference.
Dr Raouf Alebshehy, Managing Editor of TCRG’s Tobacco Tactics knowledge exchange platform, will co-chair a session titled ‘Unmasking Tobacco Industry Interference: Evidence, Monitoring Tools, and Global Cooperation for Cancer Prevention’.
Hussein Faeq, Research Assistant, will share his work in a presentation titled ‘Investigating the Tobacco Industry: Tools, Methods, and Safety’ in the session on tobacco industry interference.
Dr Tess Legg, Research Associate, will deliver a presentation titled ‘Disinformation for Profit: Tackling Commercial Determinants of Health Misinformation’ in a session on ‘Countering Cancer Misinformation: Safeguarding Public Health in the Age of Disinformation’ which is organised by Cancer Council Victoria, an Australian cancer research organisation.
Since its establishment in 2007, the award-winning Tobacco Control Research Group has investigated the activities of the global tobacco industry, particularly the four largest transnational tobacco companies. The work of the group, which is part of the University of Bath’s Centre for 21st Century Public Health, has had real impact on tobacco policymaking and is well-respected within the tobacco control community.
The team also manages TobaccoTactics.org, a unique knowledge exchange platform with information about key issues in tobacco control and the global tobacco industry. The site attracts thousands of users from across the world including researchers, policymakers, journalists and advocates.

Smoking tobacco causes at least 20 different types of cancer and tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer in the world. Effective tobacco control measures are therefore crucial for the prevention of cancer on a global scale.
