The University Executive Board (UEB) has approved the launch of a new Technician Progression Framework for technical staff who directly support research and teaching, marking a significant milestone for the University and a major step forward in the recognition and development of our technical community.

Following several years of collaborative development, consultation and extensive sector benchmarking, the framework will be implemented from the 2026/27 academic year and delivers on our commitments under the Technician Commitment and the Research Culture Action Plan.

Professor Emma Carmel, Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) and project sponsor said:

I am delighted to support the launch of the Technician Progression Framework, which recognises the vital contribution that our technical staff make to our research, our teaching and our wider University community. Their expertise underpins much of what we do and is central to delivering high-quality outcomes for our students and research partners.

This framework is an important step in ensuring that technical colleagues are recognised and supported to develop. It aligns closely with our University strategy by strengthening our research culture, enabling innovation, and investing in the people and capabilities that will shape our future success.

The framework addresses a longstanding need for clearer, more transparent career pathways for technical staff. It introduces a structured and consistent evidence-based progression process that is aligned with academic career principles and enables in-post progression based on sustained contribution. It is designed to provide greater clarity around expectations across technical expertise, impact, professional skills, values and commitment to growth. This will support colleagues to plan their development while ensuring fairness and consistency in progression decisions.

Professor Marcus Munafò, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost added:

The approval of the Technician Progression Framework marks a significant and long anticipated step forward for our University.

Our technical staff play a vital role in enabling world class research and high quality teaching, and it's essential that we recognise and support their contribution through clear, fair, and transparent career pathways.

This framework reflects several years of collaborative work and sector insight, demonstrating our support for the Technician Commitment, strengthening research culture, and creating an environment where technical expertise can thrive and develop.

The introduction of this framework is an important and positive step in strengthening our research culture and enhancing the experience of our technical staff. By recognising expertise, supporting career growth and promoting equity, the framework will contribute to improved recruitment, retention and engagement across our technical community.

Professor Tim Ibell, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Design commented:

The implementation of the Technicians Progression Framework is a major step forward for our University. The Framework now provides comparable consistency for our technician colleagues as compared with academic career progression. This is important on all sorts of levels. I am thrilled to see this initiative come to life at last.

Please visit the Technicians Progression: Information and Guidance Hub to begin to become familiar with the framework, guidance and supporting materials. Opportunities to find out more about the new framework as part of the launch are taking place during two information sessions being held on 28th July and 16th September and technical staff should have received invitations to these.
