Hosted in the East Building, the new University of Bath Institute for Sustainability (IfS) will hold its inaugural event in January 2023, welcoming all members of the University to join in to mark the start of this new chapter.

The IfS is an evolution of the Centre for Sustainable and Circular Technologies (CSCT), a research centre that has accrued many successes since its foundation in 2008.

During this new phase of growth, the IfS sets out to provide Bath's ever-expanding multidisciplinary research community with the leadership, resources and support needed to make a difference in tackling some of the most pressing issues facing society. To achieve this, the IfS will continue to nurture a wide range of fruitful collaborations and partnerships, ensuring its work is informed equally by cutting-edge technologies and real-world needs.

Professors Matthew Davidson and Marcelle McManus, formerly CSCT Co-Directors, will continue in the same roles in the IfS, along with Associate Directors Dr Antoine Buchard and Dr Stephen Allen, and Operations Director Francesca Guiso Gallisai.

Professor Davidson said: “We are truly excited to continue building on the foundations laid out by the CSCT – science and technology driven sustainability and interdisciplinarity. The institute will bring together a unique range of technical expertise in fundamental and applied research in sustainability taking a whole systems approach.”

Professor McManus said: “The new institute will apply interdisciplinarity across all University’s activities –education and training, fundamental and applied research, international collaboration, policy, public engagement and knowledge exchange activities. The timing of this new institute is critically important, with the climate emergency and threat of biodiversity collapse we know we need to do things differently. We look forward to working to create and provide solutions to some of these global challenges.”

Professor Ian White, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bath, said: “I am delighted to see the CSCT become the Institute for Sustainability. Becoming an Institute will build on the Centre’s very impressive and important work so far to increase its reach and capacity.

“I congratulate everyone involved in progressing the CSCT to become the Institute for Sustainability, and I look forward to seeing it continuing to grow both its portfolio and its intellectual authority in this vital area of research.”

The launch event will take place in East Building, Room 1.1, on 17 January 2023, 4-5.30pm.
