Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, has appointed Professor Ian White FREng, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bath, as a Deputy Lieutenant.

Lord Lieutenants are non-political roles and act as Her Majesty’s representatives in the county, playing a varied role in the community. Mrs Maw has expressed her wish for the Lieutenancy to contribute to the sense of pride and place that is enjoyed by many within Somerset.

Deputy Lieutenants (DLs) are recognised for distinguished service to the community, country or county and undertake to assist the Lord-Lieutenant in the performance of any duties that may be laid upon her. There are currently 37 DLs geographically spread over the county of Somerset.

Professor Ian White said: “It is a great honour to be appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant alongside such distinguished members of the community. The role we, at the University of Bath, can play in this county is really important and is something which we’re seeking to further strengthen.

“We are most grateful to HM Lord-Lieutenant of Somerset, Annie Maw, for engaging so positively with the University over many years, including recently when two University projects designed to reduce injuries in horse racing were presented to Her Majesty The Queen as part of a Royal Visit to Somerset. I look forward to finding new ways of contributing to the community in Somerset through my role of Deputy Lieutenant.”
