Following the earlier phases of the Windows 11 desktop upgrade programme, the rollout is now moving into the Faculty of Engineering and Design and the Faculty of Science.

Windows 10 licences expire in October, so we're aiming to complete all upgrades by the end of September. Moving to Windows 11 keeps your device secure and supported.

From the week commencing Mon 13 Jul, desktop PCs in both faculties will begin upgrading to Windows 11.

Progress so far

The programme is making strong progress across the University:

  • Upgrades for Professional Services and School of Management staff are over 74% complete
  • Upgrades are underway in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Over 200 desktops, along with surplus monitors and peripherals, have now been retired, reducing unnecessary support and upgrade costs. These devices are being reused, donated to our designated charities or, where the equipment is too old, disposed of sustainably

What to expect

When your desktop PC is ready to upgrade, you will receive a daily notification. Select "More information" to open the Windows 11 Information Hub, which includes everything you need to prepare for and complete the upgrade.

Some desktops with special requirements, such as those running complex software, are reviewed before upgrading and may be placed on hold while the team resolves any issues.

How to prepare

Before your upgrade takes place:

  • Your desktop PC will be rebuilt with a fresh Windows 11 setup (re-imaged), so anything saved locally will be erased
  • Save any files stored locally on your PC (C: drive) to your University OneDrive
  • Most software is compatible with Windows 11, but there may be some exceptions. Visit the Software Solutions page to check any software you use
  • If you use specialist or bespoke software, speak to your department's Windows 11 Champion before the upgrade takes place
  • Set aside around 2 hours. Your PC will not be usable during the upgrade

Support and resources

The Windows 11 Information Hub includes preparation steps, what happens during the upgrade, reinstalling software, and training and support materials.
