Higher Education Scholarships for Palestinians (HESPAL)

This scheme is available to academic staff in Palestinian universities to study a Master's at Bath.

The HESPAL programme is a unique scholarship scheme supporting the capacity-building of academics and the institutional development of higher education institutions in Palestine. It aims to foster renewed and sustainable links between Palestinian and UK universities and create lasting professional networks.

The British Council Palestine and the University of Bath will jointly support up to three Master's Scholarships for September 2026. The scholarship covers:

  • academic tuition fees through fee waivers
  • a monthly stipend
  • arrival and thesis allowance
  • allowance to contribute towards visa, health and travel costs

Dependent costs and English language tests are not included as part of this scholarship.


Eligibility criteria

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you must also meet all of the below criteria.


In order to be eligible you must hold an offer from the University of Bath for a full-time, postgraduate taught master's course* starting in 2026.

You must also:

  • be a Palestinian from the Gaza strip (including displaced Gazans)
  • be currently employed by the Gazan University which nominates you, which must be one of the participating Gazan universities
  • sign a written contract with your university declaring that you will return to Palestine and work in the university on completion of your degree
  • have achieved a high second-class or first-class bachelor's honours degree or international equivalent in your undergraduate study

Prospective applicants must complete the HESPAL application form in collaboration with their current Palestinian university employer. Their university will then nominate their selected candidates and pass all applications to the British Council Palestine. The British Council Palestine and the University of Bath will then coordinate the selection of candidates.
