Our Summer and Winter Schools will help you develop your expertise in electrochemistry. Methods covered are relevant to academic and industrial research.

The University of Bath Electrochemistry Summer and Winter Schools provide intensive, hands-on training for PhD students, academic researchers and industrial scientists. Delivered by electrochemistry experts from the Universities of Bath and Bristol, the schools combine expert lectures with introductory and advanced small-group laboratory experiments. Approximately 60% of each course is dedicated to practical work.

Participants develop their understanding of electrochemical theory and learn how to design and perform measurements, assess data quality, and analyse and interpret results using modern electrochemical instrumentation.

Our Winter School has run for more than 25 years and provides training in electrochemical theory and techniques. Participants complete introductory laboratory sessions followed by six in-depth experiments selected from a choice of nine.

Our Summer School has run for more than 30 years and specialises in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Participants complete introductory laboratory sessions followed by five in-depth experiments selected from a choice of seven.

Applications include batteries, electrocatalysis, corrosion, sensing, photovoltaics and materials science.

Course fees

The four-day Summer School is £1350; the five-day Winter School is £1450.

Fees include course materials, daily lunches, refreshments and a course dinner in Bath.

Practical training from electrochemistry experts

Our schools are designed for researchers who want to strengthen their theoretical understanding and practical skills. The expert course team delivers both the lectures and laboratory sessions, providing continuity between theory and practice and allowing participants to discuss their own questions directly with experienced electrochemists.

The Winter School is suitable for researchers new to electrochemistry, as well as those with some theoretical knowledge but limited practical experience. The course is particularly valuable for PhD students who encounter electrochemistry during their research and industrial scientists implementing electrochemical methods for the first time. It builds understanding from fundamental theory through to practical measurements, experimental design, data analysis and interpretation.

The Summer School provides specialist training in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is suitable both for researchers new to impedance spectroscopy and for experienced users who want to develop greater confidence in experimental design, data fitting and interpretation, and understand common experimental pitfalls.

In both schools, participants work in small groups with modern electrochemical instrumentation and learn through hands-on experiments supported by expert teaching. A final open laboratory session allows participants to revisit experiments, explore techniques they missed, repeat measurements, or discuss electrochemical questions in greater depth.

Our teaching team comprises experienced researchers from the Universities of Bath and Bristol, with expertise spanning electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electrochemical kinetics, batteries, photovoltaics, electrocatalysis, photoelectrochemistry, sensors, corrosion, materials chemistry and electrochemical engineering, covering both fundamental and applied electrochemistry.
