Aims: This unit is concerned with technologies for healthcare covering all aspects of healthy living (for example, biomedical devices for health monitoring and therapeutics, regenerative medicine and future food sources) and the role that chemical engineers play in developing new technologies and treatments. You will study applications across the scales from nano to macro for whole system design with the goal of designing healthcare technologies that achieve triple bottom line performance.

Content: Specific topics could include:
  • Review of basic human cell biology.
  • Basic principles of cell adhesion, migration, and signalling pathways.
  • Control of cell function by the extracellular matrix and soluble growth factors (tissue microenvironments).
  • Stem cell engineering.
  • Scaffolds/substrates design and characterization
  • Cellular and acellular therapies for regenerative medicine
  • Fluid mechanics and mass transfer for healthcare applications.
  • Design of enzyme-based biodevices for healthcare applications
  • Bioreactor, biodevices, and bioprocess design for healthcare applications.
  • Mathematical models for bioreactor and biodevice design.
This unit utilizes a combination of problem classes, traditional lectures, workshops, plus pair- and small-group working.
