Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Explain the nature and roles of accounting with a focus on operations and purchasing and the purpose of the three major accounting statements.
  • Use tools to analyse the organisation' operational performance.
  • Formulate an understanding of basic costing techniques and its links to decision making.
  • Define a budget and show how budgets, corporate objectives, long-term plans and stock management are interrelated.
  • Explore process costing methodologies.



Synopsis: Develop an understanding of key financial information in the organisation. You will learn how decisions made in procurement and production affect the overall performance of the product, department and organisation. The financial accounting part of the unit will develop your understanding of financial information and how to generate financial statements. In the management accounting part of the unit You will learn to use financial accounting information as a basis for decision-making.

Content: Key elements to be included include:
  • Overview of accounts and accounting statements
  • Use of management information for internal analysis and decision making
  • Introduction of key budgeting concepts for manufacturing and managing supply constraints
  • Introduction to transfer pricing
  • Other topics relevant to operations, logistics and supply chain management processes
These elements map to the foundational and contemporary issues relating to the operations, logistics and supply chain management processes, and those of related disciplines, and in particular support the analysis, synthesis, analysis, evaluation and interpretation of information from primary and secondary and primary sources.
