Learning Outcomes: At the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • Explain principles of psychology and management research that are relevant and potentially useful in defining and pursuing individual career goals;
  • Use and evaluate psychology and management theory to articulate in a clear, nuanced, and compelling way what your career goals are;
  • Clarify how these career goals fit into your broader life goals;
  • Engage in self-reflection on individual goals and their relation to career development.



Synopsis: Explore your career goals and how to fit them into what you want out of life. You will have dedicated time and space to reflect. You will receive career guidance based on psychology and organisational behaviour research about career success and what it means to live a good life.

Content: The content of the class comprises primarily a discussion of recent research in psychology and management on the key psychological forces underlying contemporary working lives (including topics such as the link between money and happiness, passion at work, expertise, the value of helping others, etc.). This knowledge is used for helping students deepen their understanding of who they are and who they want to become in their career, with a view towards increasing the chances that they will have productive and happy working lives. Students will reflect on their own values and on the relevance of different areas of theory.
