  • acquired an understanding of the factors involved in the employment relationship and the different legal rules and principles which apply to this context.
  • identified key areas relevant to managing the employment setting, including the knowledge of hiring and firing.
  • gained knowledge of cases which offer insights into the legal and procedural methods of dealing with workplace problems.
  • participated in a mock tribunal which involves drawing together theory and practice.



Synopsis: Acquire knowledge of the legal framework that shapes employer-employee relationship and its impact on those involved. You will develop your understanding of: - the factors involved in the employment relationship - the legal rules and principles which apply in this context You'll work on a case-study and take part in a mock tribunal: a practical way to use legal materials

Content: This unit will cover:
  • The legal framework: the roles of the courts, employment tribunals and other bodies such as ACAS and trades unions, and the sources and influences on employment are set out.
  • The relevance of changes introduced by EU law are drawn into this framework.
  • Contracts of employment and consequent duties of employers and employees are considered in detail, including issues such as discrimination (racial, religious, sexual, disability and trade union rights) and health and safety at work.
  • Rights on termination of employment, unfair and wrongful dismissal and the developing role of conciliation are covered.
