Learning Outcomes: After completing this unit, the students will learn how to:
  • Understand the meaning of HRM from employee as well as organisational perspectives;
  • Identify the contribution of HRM to employees and organisations;
  • Understand and identify the role of HR professionals in organisations;
  • Critically assess the practical value of HRM theories, concepts, and debates in current business context;
  • Understand the meaning of the key HRM functions;
  • Analyse the role of the key HRM functions in organisations;
  • Identify how HRM functions create HR systems in organisations;
  • Analyse the impact of HR systems in organisations;
  • Apply the HRM theories, functions and concepts to case studies.



Synopsis: Develop your understanding of key theories and practices related to people management. You will explore perspectives from organisational behaviour, organisational psychology and human resource management. You will have opportunities to apply knowledge and skills learned to practical scenarios involving key people management issues.

Content: The unit content will include the following topics: Introduction to HRM theories/models; HRM Functions (Recruitment, Selection, Negotiation, Training and Development; Performance Management); HRM Outcomes (commitment, engagement, performance, turnover); HR Professionals Role (Leger and Ulrich's Models); HRM Systems (Best Fit and Best Practice).
