Learning Outcomes: By the end of the unit, you will be able to:
  • deliver a variety of mathematical presentations and
  • critically evaluate the delivery and whether it is appropriate for the audience.



Aims: To develop practical techniques for communicating mathematics for educational and enrichment purposes and theoretical ideas to better understand how mathematics is learnt.

Content: Students will:
  • Critically evaluate a range of existing mathematical communication interactions (e.g., in the form of videos, articles, or lesson/workshop/event)
  • Reflect on how to inspire, engage, and motivate an audience when delivering mathematical content
  • Deliver two Mathematical Interactions, with at least one of these live, which are typically:
    - a workshop/masterclass, delivered as a small group, to a live audience
    - a piece of content, created for a specific audience (e.g., a video, an article, a lesson, a website)
  • Critically evaluate the Mathematical Interactions, with reflections on success and ways to improve outcomes
  • Attend sessions covering a range of examples and advice for how to plan, deliver, and evaluate mathematical communication, alongside regular mentoring tutorials with course leaders
