Learning Outcomes: 
At the end of this unit you should be able to demonstrate:
* An understanding of key physical processes that determine the Earth's climate.
* An appreciation of the use of a range of conceptual models to understand key elements of the Earth System related to climate and climate change.
* Familiarity with mathematical techniques, including computation where appropriate, that are commonly used in the analysis of conceptual models of the Earth System.

Aims:  In this unit you will study the physical science of climate and climate change. You will develop relatively simple conceptual, mechanistic mathematical models, mostly based on differential equations, to describe key processes in the climate system. You will review and implement a range of mathematical techniques for the analysis of these models.

Content:  Modelling philosophy. Physical science  Energy budget models; further topics chosen from: Ocean circulation, thermohaline dynamics, El Nino; atmospheric circulation, Hadley cells; vegetation and the global carbon cycle, algal blooms, selfsustaining ecosystems; GCMs, ESMs. Mathematical techniques  modelling with ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems analysis, bifurcation theory; further topics chosen from: analysis of data and statistics, multiscale analysis, asymptotics, nondimensionalisation, computational analysis (Matlab or Python).
