Learning Outcomes: |
By the end of this unit students will be able to:
* Record a set of ideas and tools that are critical for operating effectively in an industrial environment; * Assess existing and initiate new approaches to problem solving in a changing industrial environment; * Conceptualise the solution to a mathematical problem from the point of view of a relevant industrial context; * Communicate effectively to an industrial client, verbally and in writing. |
Aims: | The aim of the unit is to articulate the process of linking the mathematical machinery, real-world problem solving techniques, and concrete industrial contexts. Students will be introduced to basic principles of industrial application and develop skills that are essential for an industry-oriented mathematician. They will learn about industrial practices, the process of translating a mathematical solution into the language of industry, and acquire the related communication and project management skills. |
Skills: | Communication of mathematical solutions to an non-academic audience, keeping a written record of the process of problem solving. |
Content: | * How to communicate mathematical solutions to a non-academic partner. * Writing skills for effective operation in industry. * Four mini-courses on industrial processes, such as: "How industry works", "NDAs and IPRs", "How contract works", "Industrial innovation" (or "From basic concept to working solution"), "Reproducibility of work". * Assignment consolidating the knowledge and skills learnt: briefing session, supervised group work, presentation, and feedback session. |
