Synopsis: This is a semester long unit which focuses on the basic principles of the English legal system, English contract law, some elements of tort Law as well asprovide a brief introduction to criminal law.

By the end of the unit, students should be able to identify the structure and workings of the English legal system and be able to apply the knowledge of law that they have gained to their own personal experience.

Content: This unit allows students to understand legal terminology and functions of the law, statutory interpretation, court structure and personnel, legal objectives and remedies administered within the English Legal System.

Contract law: understand the principles and rules relevant to forming a legally binding contract, implications of the terms - express and implied, an overview of consumer protection and termination of a contract.

Tort law; understand the principles and context, in areas including defamation, law of trespass, negligence generally, defences and remedies.

Understand the different types of liability.

Course availability:

MN12149 is a Generally Available Unit which is available to all students of the University (subject to the usual constraints) to take either as a Director of Studies approved option within their programme of study or as an 'extra' unit which does not count towards a final award.
