Terms Of Reference

Purpose

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee provides strategic oversight, guidance and assurance on all matters relating to equity, diversity and inclusion across the University. It ensures compliance with legal obligations, supports the development and implementation of EDI strategies, and promotes a culture of inclusivity for staff, students and the wider University community.

Responsibilities

  1. To establish strategic direction for EDI across the University

  2. To provide advice on the implications for EDI flowing from the University Strategy, policies, practices and plans to appropriate bodies

  3. To assure compliance with regulatory requirements (for example the Equality Act 2010, Public Sector Equality Duty, Statutory Pay Gap reporting)

  4. To monitor and provide assurance that suitable progress is being made in delivering EDI objectives, including those required to meet Charter needs

  5. Promote inclusive leadership and embed EDI principles across all University policies and practices

  6. To seek assurance that institutional risks associated with EDI are being identified and appropriately managed

  7. To publish an annual report to provide appropriate assurance on the quality and standards of the University's approach on EDI matters

Reporting Relationships

The Committee operates under the auspices of the University Executive Board and receives its delegated authority for approvals from UEB via the scheme of delegation.

Reporting to other bodies, such as Council and Senate, will be through UEB.

Procedural Rules

Meeting Frequency

The Committee normally meets three times a year.

Quorum

One third of the Committee membership.

In Attendance

Other members may be co-opted or invited to attend for specific meetings at the discretion of the Committee. This includes the Head of Access and Widening Participation.
