The future of the automotive industry needs a new type of engineer, someone who is in their element with complex propulsion systems incorporating combustion engines, electric machines, and batteries. We’ve designed a bespoke course to prepare mechanical engineers for the electrification of their sector.
Your studies will focus on the design, performance, and operation of automotive powertrains and vehicle systems. We’ll teach you about electrical components, and their mechanical contexts and constraints. This means you’ll understand both the fundamental principles of batteries, power electronics, and motors, as well as how to integrate these into a system. By the end of your course, you should be able to analyse vehicle requirements to design and specify different types of propulsion systems.
Industry needs innovative engineers who can create sustainable solutions for the next generation of vehicles. To truly contribute to the future of your sector you will need a diverse and transferable skill set. During your course, you will cover the breadth of modern automotive engineering and explore in detail all aspects of automotive propulsion, from batteries and electric motors to advanced combustion engines and their fuels. Alongside this, you will have developed skills in engineering project management, as well as vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics.
You’ll work independently, and in teams, on projects based on real industrial problems. In your first two semesters, you’ll have the opportunity to learn by putting ideas to the test, both in computer lab sessions, as well as hands-on laboratory sessions. We’ll give you the opportunity to develop your technical, professional, and research skills, so you are prepared for the workplace or to begin a career in academia.

At Bath, we’ve been researching within the automotive sector for over 40 years. From downsizing internal combustion engines and turbo-charging small engines, to alternative fuels, hybrid vehicles, fuel cells and electric vehicles, our course draws on our specialist automotive research activities.
Our new Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) will further support the automotive industry in developing ultra-low and zero emission vehicles. Our academics are the heart of IAAPS and bring their automotive engineering expertise and industry connections to their teaching.
Use specialist facilities
You’ll have access to control, simulation, and rapid prototyping equipment during your degree. To support your chosen dissertation specialism, you might also use some of our research facilities. This could include our specialist automotive equipment, such as a chassis dynamometer or engine and electric motor research platforms. We also have emissions measurement facilities, a battery emulator, and a turbocharger test facility.
