Develop a strong mathematical foundation in data science and statistics together with specialist knowledge for a career in the global healthcare industry.

Data science, statistics and machine learning are revolutionising healthcare. These methodologies are improving our understanding of disease cause and progression, influencing clinical and governmental decision-making, and rapidly becoming vital components of the modern healthcare system.

This course will equip you with the analytic skills sought after by employers such as pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and healthcare analytics companies. You’ll study the fundamentals of data science, machine learning, statistics and statistical modelling, alongside programming in both Python and R. You’ll gain extensive practical experience of how to interpret, analyse and evaluate data in healthcare applications through a bespoke year-long unit in Data Science and Statistics for Health and a summer research project.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for graduates in highly numerate disciplines who are interested in a career in the healthcare industry but have limited experience of statistics or data science and would like to develop their knowledge in this area. The first semester provides foundational training in programming, machine learning, data science and statistics. The second semester is focused on more advanced statistical techniques to challenge real-world data. The dissertation provides an opportunity to use these skills to analyse genuine health-related data.

Research project

The cross-departmental nature of the degree means you’ll be able to choose from a wide variety of areas for your research project. Projects will generally be carried out in collaboration with academics engaged in health-related research from the Department for Health, the Department of Life Sciences, or the Department of Psychology, and involve statistical analysis of real-world health research data. For example:

  • Machine learning for early detection of psoriatic arthritis
  • Ensemble learning for medical images
  • Bayesian methods for interim decision making in clinical trials.

This course lasts 2 years. It starts in September 2024 and ends in 2026. Welcome week starts on 23 September 2024.

Contact hours and workload

Overall workload

You should expect to spend approximately 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. These hours consist of structured activities and independent learning. You will experience a mix of in person teaching, that will take place on campus, and structured online learning delivered through the University’s virtual learning environment.

Structured learning activities

MSc programmes deliver taught units in the first and second semester, with the Summer dedicated to a dissertation. The second semester will have less structured learning as you will start to prepare for your dissertation. Both during the dissertation preparation and the dissertation, supervision will take place at times suitable to you and your supervisor.

Typically, you can expect to spend 15 to 20 hours on structured learning activities per teaching week. The majority of these activities will be in timetabled sessions on campus. A small proportion may be online.

In-person teaching and online activities

Timetabled sessions delivered in person on campus will be a mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, and laboratories. Online activities may include following a recorded lecture, or other learning materials, or joining a timetabled live interactive session through Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

Independent learning

The remainder of your time outside these structured activities will be spent in independent learning which includes individual research, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments, presentations, or revising for exams.

To support you in your studies you will be able to access, outside of timetabled learning, facilities on campus and in Bath such as study spaces, computers, and the Library.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

You should have a first or strong second-class undergraduate degree or equivalent international equivalent.

Budgeting
