Lead organisations and society towards a net zero world by developing the knowledge and skills to deliver decarbonisation initiatives with real impact.

In the face of a climate emergency, reaching net zero is imperative for organisations, and decarbonisation plays a crucial role in this journey. We must adapt quickly to the complexities of reducing carbon emissions across practices, processes, and technologies. This challenging transition creates an opportunity for a new kind of workforce – climate-literate graduates who can apply technical, managerial, and strategical skillsets to decarbonisation projects.

Our course focuses on developing your knowledge in the areas employers highly value. These include systems thinking, critical analysis, creativity, collaborative and interpersonal skills to lead organisational and sustainable change.

You’ll deliver impact as part of your studies by working on an innovative consultancy project with a company or organisation instead of doing a traditional dissertation. You could work with businesses, charities, government, or the local community on a decarbonisation project linked to real challenges and delivering strategic impact.

A flexible and collaborative learning experience

We provide flexible, hybrid options to learning (subject to visa requirements) so if you can’t always be on campus, you can still engage fully and build valuable remote-working skills. It also allows us to reduce our course’s carbon impact.

We take a team-based approach to learning because the more experience of teamwork you have, the better prepared you’ll be for the workplace. Throughout the course you’ll work in diverse groups with students from a range of backgrounds for a unique educational experience.

From course to career

By working with a company or organisation on our consultancy project, you'll gain direct experience of professional collaboration working on real problems relevant in industry. As well as this, you'll have the support of our Faculty’s postgraduate employability team, who run professional skills workshops, and one-to-one sessions to help you with your CV and interview preparation.

When you graduate, you could go on to design and deliver decarbonisation solutions and zero-carbon projects in a range of organisations, including businesses, charities, NGOs and government.

This course lasts 1 year. It starts in October 2024 and ends in 2025. Welcome week starts on 23 September 2024.

Learning and assessment

Learning and teaching

We provide a flexible high-quality learning experience delivered online and in person on campus.

You should expect to spend approximately 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. These hours consist of structured activities, teamwork and independent learning.

You will be offered between 9 to 18 hours of timetabled learning activities per week, of which the majority will be delivered in synchronous hybrid sessions. These sessions are delivered on campus but, depending on visa requirements, you can take part remotely whenever this is more appropriate for you. The sessions typically include a mix of seminar discussions and team-based working. We provide on-campus, bookable spaces and online collaborative tools to support your teamwork.

Assessment breakdown

You will be assessed by a range of methods designed to develop and test your skills and knowledge.

These will typically include open book examinations, written assignments, in-class tests and activities, peer review, self-reflection, and presentations.

Assessed work will typically include a substantial element (20-40%) of team activity, which may include peer evaluation.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

Origin of qualifications

British qualifications

You should have a Bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a 2:2 or above.

To apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in a numerate subject. This includes engineering and science degrees, as well as other disciplines where there is a numerate element to the course such as architecture, economics, psychology or business.

If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years you completed your degree in the UK you may be exempt from our English language requirements. A combined offer (with English pre-sessional) may be offered to students who do not meet the IELTS criteria but whose other credentials meet the programme requirements.

Typically, we require a final overall result of at least Second Class (Lower) Honours, 50% or C, however we ask that you upload a copy of the grading scale used by your institution, along with your transcript, when you submit your application due to the range of grading scales used by different institutions.

30 credits

Work in teams on a real, decarbonisation-related project with tangible impact. Typically, you’ll work with a partner organisation to, for example, find a viable solution to a decarbonisation challenge, or execute a proposed decarbonisation intervention. During this unit, you’ll use the skills you’ve developed so far on the course – design, planning, implementation, and evaluation – together with teamwork, communication, and stakeholder management.

Ideas, concepts and design

10 credits

Use creativity and rigorous evaluation to identify innovative and meaningful design solutions. You’ll develop creative processes both individually and in teams, using a variety of methods taken from design practice and theory. These include ideation, concept development, and evaluating proposed solutions. This unit involves both hands-on and theoretical learning.

Organisational change management

10 credits

Combine organisational and behavioural change theory with a hands-on approach to developing skills in communication and stakeholder management. This will prepare you to effect action through influencing and changing others’ behaviour at both individual and organisational levels.

Professional skills for climate leadership

10 credits

Develop the interpersonal skills required to lead climate initiatives. Working in teams, you’ll develop collaborative skills such as teamwork, influencing, negotiation, mentoring and networking. You will also develop personal competencies such as reflection, and the awareness of the emotional impacts of climate change on yourself and others. Finally, you’ll explore the potential of diversity and the dangers of unconscious bias.

Project management for decarbonisation

Explore the strong approach organisations are taking to reduce their carbon footprint and reach net zero. This involves project management, risk management, governance, and reporting. You’ll learn about project management in the context of sustainability within an organisation. You’ll also practise using techniques and tools to help organisations mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Science-based decision making

10 credits

Develop a principled approach to make sound evidence-based decisions that inform sustainable product development and environmental activities in an organisation. Using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, you’ll objectively appraise the impacts of carbon reduction interventions. You’ll also explore the ‘cradle-to-grave’ journey of a product and its potential social, economic, political, and climate impact. And you’ll learn how to report and communicate results to decision makers.

Systems thinking

10 credits

Explore the many complex systemic challenges created by the climate crisis using holistic, systems-thinking approach. This includes economic, societal, political, environmental, and ethical perspectives. You’ll use this approach to see how radical change can be achieved at speed and scale. You’ll also identify some of the inevitable barriers, trade-offs and challenges associated with a climate positive transformation.
