As we face a climate emergency, decarbonisation and sustainability are crucial challenges for organisations and society. We must adapt to the complexities of reducing carbon emissions across practices, processes, and technologies. This challenging transition also creates an opportunity for a new kind of workforce. We need climate-literate graduates with technical, managerial, analytical, and strategic mindsets.

It's time to turn ambition into action. Our course trains you to take on decarbonisation projects and sustainability initiatives across companies, organisations and society. Focusing on global citizenship, you’ll develop the climate literacy (scientific, organisational and socio-political) needed to lead and deliver positive carbon outcomes. You’ll develop your knowledge in areas employers highly value. These include systems thinking, critical analysis, creativity, and the collaborative and interpersonal skills to lead organisational and sustainable change.

We take a team-based approach to learning because the more experience of teamwork you have, the better prepared you’ll be for the workplace. Throughout the course you’ll work in diverse groups with students from a range of backgrounds for a unique educational experience.

When you graduate, you could become part of something bigger — taking the world towards a net-zero future. You could go on to design and deliver decarbonisation solutions professionally. Course structure

This course lasts 8 months. It starts in September 2026 and ends in 2027. Welcome week starts on 21 September 2026.

Learning and teaching

We provide a flexible high-quality learning experience delivered online and in person on campus.

You should expect to spend approximately 35 to 40 hours a week studying on your course. These hours consist of structured activities, teamwork and independent learning.

You will be offered between 9 and 18 hours of timetabled learning activities per week, of which the majority will be delivered in synchronous hybrid sessions. These sessions are delivered on campus but, depending on visa requirements, you can take part remotely whenever this is more appropriate for you. The sessions typically include a mix of seminar discussions and team-based working. We provide on-campus, bookable spaces and online collaborative tools to support your teamwork.

Assessment breakdown

You will be assessed by a range of methods designed to develop and test your skills and knowledge.

These will typically include open book examinations, written assignments, in-class tests and activities, peer review, self-reflection, and presentations.

Assessed work will typically include a substantial element (20-50%) of team activity, which may include peer evaluation.

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

British qualifications

You should have a Bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a 2:2 or above.

Explore the strong approach organisations are taking to reduce their carbon footprint and reach net zero. This involves project management, risk management, governance, and reporting. You'll learn about project- and change-management in the context of sustainability within an organisation. You'll also practise using techniques and tools to help organisations mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.

Science-based decision making

Develop a holistic approach to make robust recommendations and decisions that inform sustainable activities. Using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, you’ll develop carbon reduction interventions and effectively appraise them. You will explore the technical, social, economic and other factors that affect how analysis should be designed to match the needs of stakeholders. And you’ll learn how to report and communicate results to decision makers.

Sustainability assessment and opportunities

Explore energy and emissions-related technologies, focusing on sustainability. You’ll study their technical characteristics and the broader energy system, considering the economic, social and political context they operate in. You’ll develop quantitative analytical skills and use them to assess options and solutions with a holistic life-cycle approach. This includes carbon emissions assessments, as well as other environmental and economic indicators.

Systems thinking

Explore the many complex systemic challenges created by the climate crisis using a holistic, systems-thinking approach. This includes economic, societal, political, environmental, and ethical perspectives. You’ll use this approach to see how radical change can be achieved at speed and scale. You’ll also identify some of the inevitable barriers, trade-offs and challenges associated with a climate positive transformation.
