Automotive Engineering with Business Management MSc

1 year, starting in September 2027

Combine specialist knowledge in engineering with advanced business and management skills to impact the future of vehicle engineering in the automotive sector.

Our course advances your technical knowledge in areas such as propulsion systems. You'll blend this with business and management skills to develop a holistic understanding of their combined influence on vehicle engineering development. You'll explore the impact of a range of applications and technologies, analysing past failures and predicting future challenges. Using a systems-thinking approach, you’ll look at wider issues affecting the automotive sector including moral, ethical and sustainability.

Alongside engineering studies, you'll learn about business and management in industry, focusing on the automotive sector. This includes resource management, business processes and theory, and change management. All this helps you to develop skills useful for your future career, whatever that might be.

At the start of the course, we set you a topical automotive theme that carries through to group projects. This ensures that subject-based units are relevant to professional practice in industry. It also gives you the benefit of a personalised learning pathway.

You'll carry out group projects where you'll collaborate with students on our Automotive Engineering with Electric Propulsion MSc. You’ll also tackle a real engineering management challenge with an industrial mentor on our industry-linked business consultancy project. Here, you’ll explore new and existing business models. This includes innovative and conscientious partnerships that balance economic growth with the impact of their activity on society.

Learn from experts in the field

We’ve carried out research in the automotive sector for over 40 years so you'll learn from academics contributing to the latest research in automotive engineering. They're dedicated to applying this knowledge to your learning experience so you get the benefit of their expertise. As well as academic support, you’ll benefit from our links with industry. Your consultancy project is sponsored by a company and supported by an industrial mentor.

Use specialist facilities

Throughout the course, you'll attend laboratory sessions run on our bespoke facilities that demonstrate the principles of current and future vehicles. You'll also draw on the staff expertise and facilities at IAAPS.

Start your future here

We expect graduates from this course to go on to work as managers in the automotive industry. You could work in roles that use your technical expertise and ability to manage resources at large vehicle manufacturers, tier 1 suppliers and large consultancies. Our past graduates secured jobs at companies such as AVL, JLR, McLaren Automotive and Rolls-Royce. They've held positions including:

  • Component Engineer
  • SQD Engineer
  • Battery Cooling Component Engineer
  • Control Systems Engineer

Recognition of professional qualifications

As well as being recognised as a higher academic qualification, a number of our degrees are also accredited by professional bodies in the United Kingdom. An accredited degree may entitle you to work in a specific profession within the UK, and abroad (where there are reciprocating arrangements with professional bodies in other countries).

The requirements to practise a profession vary from country to country. If you wish to practise your profession outside the United Kingdom, you are advised to confirm that the UK professional qualification you seek is valid in the country in which you are intending to work.

‘My favourite part of the course is definitely the exposure to the technical side of things. It really consolidated what was taught in class.’

Industry-linked business consultancy project

30 credits

Carry out a large project using the skills, concepts and techniques from your studies in practice-based business scenarios. You'll work on a current business problem and research, analyse data, and present a viable solution to time and budget targets. You'll learn about the many aspects of business and appreciate integrative firm activities and cross-functional approaches to solve business problems. You'll also communicate with audiences working in different areas of business.

Assessment detail

  • Dissertation (Dissertation 50%)
  • Group Project Business Report (Report Group 30%)
  • Group Presentation (Oral presentation Group 20%)

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Critically assess the particular challenges confronting real and specific businesses
  2. Plan and conduct a research project on practice-based business issues
  3. Present effective proposals written and form
  4. Reflect on the outcomes of an activity and identify the critical decisions that led to those outcomes
  5. Develop theory-based arguments which link interdisciplinary literature and perspectives
  6. Communicate complex information clearly and effectively to the target audience.

Unit detail

  • Dynamic leadership skills training for managing consultancy projects
  • A real-world organisation presents a business problem describing an actual management challenge
  • Academic expectations of students are outlined
  • Company expectations are outlined
  • Groups are formalised and conduct of the project is established
  • Students work on the problem and present their solutions/findings to the company
  • Students also identify one current engineering management issue, analysing the issue through relevant theoretical and empirical literature.

Propulsion systems group project

15 credits

Apply knowledge learnt through your studies so far in a practical group project and develop your engineering technology skills. You'll carry out design and analysis activities as well as practical-based modelling, and laboratory sessions. You'll also experience working in a team on an open-ended problem to develop a solution involving a proposed vehicle system with a propulsion theme.

This unit spans the following periods of study:

  • Year 1 - Semester 1
  • Year 1 - Semester 2

Assessment detail

  • Individual Propulsion Systems Project Report (Report Individual 70%)
  • Exhibition Stand and associated pitch (Project output Group 30%)

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, you will be able to:
  1. Apply engineering or scientific principles in the design and modelling of an automotive propulsion system
  2. Define targets and verification metrics and cascade these to different system levels
  3. Validate proposed solutions against design criteria in the presence of uncertainty and incomplete data
  4. Solve a complex open-ended design and implementation problem relating to automotive propulsion
  5. Work within a diverse team, leveraging your own and others skills to the benefit of the project
  6. Recognise ethical and sustainability considerations and embed solutions to these within propulsion system designs
  7. Communicate complex information clearly in both written and oral format.

Unit detail

  • Real industry problems
  • Open ended automotive product development activity
  • Extensive group-work activities
  • Communicating complex data.
