The University has a longstanding and deeply embedded commitment to Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom. The University believes that Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom are necessary for the effective delivery of its charitable objects “to advance learning and knowledge by teaching and research.”
Code of Practice for Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom
The Code sets out the University’s approach to Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom and how it applies to a range of activities including: developing or reviewing policies; teaching and research; and external speakers and events. The Code applies to University staff, students and visitors.
Regulation 18 provides procedures for external speakers and events, including presentations or meetings involving external speakers as well as demonstrations or protests. This includes events held on University premises, or away from the University if held under the brand of the University or the Students’ Union, or with the University’s protection, support or backing. Regulation 18 applies to all members, staff, students and visitors to the University.
