LGBTQ+ student accommodation

We believe that everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their home. That includes having the choice of LGBTQ+ accommodation.

All our accommodation offers a diverse space where everyone should be treated with respect and tolerance. However, we understand that some students may prefer to live in accommodation specifically with other LGBTQ+ students. LGBTQ+ accommodation is an opportunity to live with people who may have shared life experiences and identify as part of the same community as you.

We encourage all LGBTQ+ students who feel more comfortable in LGBTQ+ accommodation to apply- we will provide as much of this accommodation type as there is demand for. It is also fine to not choose this as a preference, even if you do identity as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

You can apply for LGBTQ+ accommodation in Solsbury Court, Eastwood Terrace and Green Park House.

Is LGBTQ+ accommodation available to allies?

LGBTQ+ accommodation is exclusive to those who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community or who are questioning their identity.

We believe everyone should be an ally and all accommodation should be a safe space for anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+.

Can I request single gender LGBTQ+ accommodation?

LGBTQ+ accommodation is open to people of all genders and gender identities. If you prefer to live in single gender accommodation instead, you can select this as a preference.

What does LGBTQ+ mean?

LGBTQ+ is the acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning and ace. This is the definition provided by Stonewall.

How to be mindful and respectful of other students applying for LGBTQ+ accommodation

Our ResLife team will keep all information provided within the application confidential. Once you have been assigned LGBTQ+ accommodation, it won't be treated any differently from other accommodation buildings. There will be no obvious signs or marketing to identify the accommodation as LGBTQ+ and we won't confirm in general communications whether you've been allocated LGBTQ+ accommodation. If you've been in touch to discuss details, we may reference in response, so please be sure to let us know if there are any issues or concerns when you get in touch with us.

We ask students to be considerate of other residents in your accommodation who might be at a different stage of their personal journey. Please be mindful that you may be living with someone who hasn't expressed their gender or sexuality publicly. This may include friends, family members and relatives.

Other additional preferences and what to consider when making your application

If you have applied for LGBTQ+ accommodation, priority will be given to this preference over other additional preferences. If you would like a different preference to be the priority on your application please contact reslife@bath.ac.uk and we can discuss this with you.

You are able to apply for quiet and alcohol-free in addition to LGBTQ+ accommodation, however this will depend on popularity and the number of applicants.

Additional requirements if you are trans, non-binary and/or intersex

We are committed to providing a safe and happy environment for you to live in, and we will try to support any additional requirements you have. We recommend getting in touch via email or booking an appointment so we can work with you to allocate you in a room you will feel comfortable and safe in.

Some examples of what we can help with:

  • If you are trans and/or gender diverse, we may be able to allocate you in an ensuite bedroom or studio.
  • If you are non-binary, intersex, or your gender is, or might be, different to your legal gender, we can look at allocating you to a mixed-gender flat.
