How to nominate someone
This Award is given to a Director of Studies for taught programmes. It recognises how they've gone above and beyond Director of Studies’ responsibilities to create and support an exceptional learning and teaching environment in their academic Department or School, or across the wider University.
You can nominate a Director of Studies for this Award if you are:
- a postgraduate student
- an undergraduate student
- a member of academic staff
Self-nominations are not accepted.
[Submit a nomination form] to recommend someone for this Award. Nominations for the University Teaching Awards 2024 are now closed.
When we receive your nomination form, we will contact the nominee to confirm they are willing to progress to the next stage. At this point, we will ask for:
- a personal statement from each nominee in which they show how they meet at least one of the criteria for this Award
- supporting statements from the nominee’s Head of Department and relevant students.
The University's Awards Committee will consider nominations and supporting statements in April.
Criteria
Nominees must be able to demonstrate one or more of the following:
- dedication to the support of students
- dedication to the continuous improvement of the student learning experience
- support for innovative approaches to learning and teaching
- a positive example of good practice in student engagement in the Department or School
- an impact on levels of student satisfaction with the course
Eligibility
Eligibility for this Award is restricted to individual Directors of Studies for taught programmes. Directors of Teaching are eligible for the Leadership in Learning and Teaching Award. Director of Studies teams are eligible for the Best Team in Support of Student Learning Award.
Unsuccessful nominees may be nominated for the Award in subsequent years. Previous winners will be eligible for nomination five years after the Award was made.
The permanent establishment of a new Teaching Award for Director of Studies was approved by Senate on 21 November 2018. The new Award commenced in 2019.
The prize

Award winners will be presented with a certificate at the summer graduation ceremonies.
The prize money will be paid through the payroll and will be subject to PAYE.
