Pathway to Fellowship for probationary lecturers

A programme of work-based activities for lecturers at the University of Bath who need to gain a teaching qualification in order to complete probation.

Probationer Pathway to Fellowship

The Probation Pathway to Fellowship is a work-based curriculum of core activities for lecturers on probation. It is aimed at developing your understanding of academic practice within your individual, departmental and disciplinary context. Successful completion will lead to HEA Fellowship.

Who should follow this Pathway?

Under the University's minimum requirements for new teaching staff, lecturers on probation, on permanent or fixed term contracts, are required to complete this programme as part of their probation requirements.

However, if you already have a Fellowship, you may be able to apply for exemption if you meet the minimum requirements for your role.

If you are an experienced member of staff, you may wish to consider the Experiential Pathway to Fellowship for experienced Staff.

Benefits of following this Pathway

By following this Pathway, you will have an opportunity to:

  • develop the initial understanding, skills, knowledge and confidence to prepare you to become a competent and effective teacher and research manager
  • question, evaluate and develop your practice using regular critical reflection in order to improve the quality of the student learning and/or your research achievements and supervision
  • critique current scholarship in academic practice, develop critical analyses of teaching approaches and research management and develop your own practice in light of these analyses
  • develop appropriate strategies to become effective and efficient members of the academic community
  • meet your personal and professional development needs in a systematic, effective and efficient way

How will the programme be delivered?

All sessions will be delivered using a blended approach of:

  • preparatory tasks and pre-reading using resources accessed via Moodle and the CLT Hub;
  • synchronous activities which will take place using Teams or Zoom.

All core sessions of the programme will run three times in an academic year. Dates and times for future sessions are published in advance to help your planning.
