Vertically Integrated Project - Creating a sustainable community garden on campus

VIPs create sustainable, research-engaged communities of staff and students - both undergraduate and postgraduate - who work collaboratively on live projects.

This is an excellent opportunity students to have a practical opportunity to enhance the community garden enabling to it be sustainable and self sufficient becoming an asset to the University.

Background: Background: Established in 2025, on the site on a Life Sciences experimental plot, there is a Community Garden that provides the following;

-The university community with a space to meet new people

  • Learn gardening skills, and boost mental health and wellbeing for anyone at the university and local community

  • A resource for the University Nursery.

This VIP team aims to integrate all student years into assessing needs, the design and development process, but also implementation and legacy. This means that even if you are a first year, with no practical or community engagement experience, you will have the opportunity to gain experience and develop these skills. On the same note, it is possible to join us at any point in your studies, even if this is your final year and you haven’t been a part of any societies or student teams to date.

This is an exciting time to join this VIP as you will be asked to consider the needs and scope of the project setting the agenda for its future development. This could range from engaging with future users, to developing sustainable stand alone power systems and design and construction low impact structures, energy efficient seed and plant propogation.

Students should consider (where applicable);

  • Relevant Sustainability and Net Zero principles

  • Sustainable building standards

Students will gain valuable experience in;

  • Teamwork and project management

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration

  • Public engagement and communication

  • Report writing and presentation skills.

The project will provide students with practical experience, enhanced career readiness, and fostered collaboration and leadership skills.
