Vertically Integrated Project - The Washing Machine Project

VIPs create sustainable, research-engaged communities of staff and students - both undergraduate and postgraduate - who work collaboratively on live projects.

New to AY2627

This VIP will work to support the key goals of The Washing Machine Project, a social enterprise that seeks to relieve the burden of manual laundry through the provision of an accessible, off-grid, and portable washing machine designed for use in low-resource and crisis-affected contexts.

The project has four goals; - helping TWMP to develop sustainable funding and business models

  • driving down the cost of production and future innovations

  • supply chain and logistics: moving machines around the world most efficiently

  • thought leadership and owning the conversation about laundry and clothes hygiene

VIP students will start by researching innovative solutions to the 4 challenges pursued by other comparable social enterprises. Depending on the skills/interests of the team, they could develop their own strategies/innovations in relation to partnerships, supply change management, communications and thought leadership, research, or business models.

Sustainable Development Goals

SDGs: 3 Good Health and Wellbeing; 5 Gender Equality; 6 Clean Water; 8 Decent Work and 9: Innovations.
