VIP: Economic Impact Study - Midsummer Norton Illuminated Carnival

VIPs create sustainable, research-engaged communities of staff and students - both undergraduate and postgraduate - who work collaboratively on live projects.

The Midsomer Norton & District Carnival Charity Association is launching a new initiative to better understand the economic and social impact of its much-loved annual illuminated carnival. A key date in the Somerset events calendar, the carnival draws thousands of visitors each year, supports local businesses, raises funds for charities, and is powered entirely by community volunteers. We’re now offering an exciting opportunity for a group of Bath University students to lead and shape a formal Economic Impact Study of the carnival and our associated activities across the wider Somer Valley.

To better understand the economic and social impact of its much-loved annual illuminated carnival. Benefits to students include:

  • Real-world impact – Your findings will help influence funding bids, community support, and future planning.
  • Hands-on experience – Research, data collection, stakeholder engagement, analysis, reporting—you’ll do it all.
  • Autonomy – You’ll have the freedom to guide the study in a way that makes sense to you.
  • Great for your CV – Voluntary, community-driven, and directly tied to your studies.
