Workplace Essentials workshop series

This series of practical workshops is designed to help you build confidence in the core skills employers value most.

Bookings for Semester 2 2025-26 will open on 1 December 2025 at midday.

Starting a new job - whether it’s an internship, part-time role, or graduate position - can be both exciting and challenging. You’re often expected to adapt quickly, learn new tools, and communicate professionally in unfamiliar environments.

Workplace Essentials will support you through that transition. This series of practical workshops is designed to help you build confidence in the core skills employers value most.

What the workshops cover

From writing clearly and managing emails to using Excel and contributing in diverse teams, each session focuses on a key area to help you feel more prepared and capable in the workplace.

In Semester 2 2025-26, the workshops available are:

  • Mind the gap: Communicating across cultures
  • Message received: Writing emails that work
  • Make meetings matter: Speak up, stand out, stay on track
  • From zero to spreadsheet hero: Using Microsoft Excel
  • Understanding spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • From blank page to published project: Using Microsoft Word

Workshop availability

Most of the workshops run twice a semester, once in-person on campus and once online. They are very popular and tend to get booked up quickly so we recommend reserving your place as soon as you can.

If the workshop you want to join is full, we strongly encourage you to join the waiting list; if you are on the waiting list and a space becomes available, you will receive an email to let you know. If we add more workshops, we will also be able to let you know directly.

How to book a place

All workshops are available to book in MySkills.

Workshops for Semester 2 2025-26 are available to book from midday on 1 December 2025.

Who can register

These workshops are designed for all students.

Your course, year of study, or long-term career goals don't matter; these workshops will provide you with invaluable support in a professional working environment no matter what.

Public speaking

There is a separate workshop series covering public speaking. This will run twice in Semester 2 2025-26, and as with the Workplace Essentials workshops, we encourage you to book early as this series is very popular and is usually over-subscribed.
