This interdisciplinary project will be delivered by a multidisciplinary team of Chemical Engineers and Chemists with complementary skills in engineering, membrane emulsification, biobased materials, sustainable ingredients, elucidation of soft material structure, and formulation. The BIOBEADS research team will also work with industrial partners, who are variously manufacturers of formulation ingredients and formulated products and equipment/technology providers.

Applications are invited from candidates with:

1.   the minimum of a good 4-year undergraduate degree in Chemistry (MChem), Chemical or Materials Engineering (MEng), or a related discipline (candidates with a first class 3-year BSc, or BEng, degrees and relevant experience may be considered)

3.   a background in, or knowledge pertaining to, one or more of the following:

a)       membrane emulsification, or chemical engineering flow systems;

b)       biopolymers, particularly cellulose or chitin;

c)       characterisation of emulsions, or particles;

d)       physico-chemical characterization, e.g. particle/droplet sizing, surface tension, rheology, or scattering (X-ray, neutron);

e)       materials characterization, including porosity, compression strength/hardness, and surface characterization; and

f)         chemical cross-linking of polymers, or particles, and chemical reactions in multiphase systems.

Any experience working with industrial partners and in cross-disciplinary research will be a distinct advantage, as will knowledge of formulation, manufacturing or sustainable processes and materials

The RA will work in a team, which includes two postdoctoral research officers and a PhD student and, for appropriate candidates, there may be an opportunity to undertake a PhD while working.  Candidates should demonstrate good attention to safety and record keeping and excellent communication skills, commensurate with their experience (you will be asked to supply a piece of written work, such as a research report, to support this).

The RA will be based in the Department of Chemistry, but will be expected to work closely with team members in the Department of Chemical Engineering.  The successful candidate may be expected to travel to industrial partners’ manufacturing sites.
