We have an exciting opportunity in the South Sciences technical team for a candidate with a passion for scientific health and safety.  Working across the Department of Biology & Biochemistry and Department of Chemistry, your key focus will be promoting a positive health and safety culture and good practice in our bespoke teaching, research and communal facilities.  In this wide ranging and interesting role, you will support a wide range of stakeholders, giving measured and logical guidance on health and safety matters and providing practical solutions.  

About the role

As a hands-on and available Health and Safety Coordinator, working closely with the Technical Supervisors and Technical Manager. In addition, you will be one of the key points of contact for staff and students. You will produce and provide tailored health and safety inductions to staff, students and visitors, carry out inspections of our wide-ranging facilities and ensure incident reporting processes are communicated and followed up on. Ensuring our Risk Assessment procedures are communicated and followed is also a crucial part of this role.

About you

You will be experienced in providing health safety support.  With a comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation, focusing on scientific laboratories, you will also have:

  • A NEBOSH National Certificate in Health and Safety (or equivalent).
  • A degree in a relevant Scientific subject or equivalent experience
  • A proactive and hands on approach to promoting a positive and transparent safety culture, especially among those using chemical and biological materials.
  • The ability to encourage others to demonstrate good health and safety practice and compliance to relevant health and safety standards.

A diplomatic approach is essential, where communicating effectively and engaging with stakeholders are key to the success of this post.
