Project Lead: Ilaria Bussoli, Department of Maths.
This project entails co-producing written teaching resources with a student for core mathematics modules from Y1 to Y3/4 that embed EDI content. These resources could be in the format of a tutorial exercise, an example to be run in a lecture or to be embedded in lecture notes, or similar activities. Examples encompass real-world data sets with social equity implications, historical mathematicians from underrepresented groups (e.g., expanding the resources we have in place from Ada Lovelace Day), ethical impact of mathematical sciences (e.g. Manhattan project), or culturally diverse mathematical practices (e.g. differences in counting systems in Algebra – examples from China, Papua New Guinea).
The scope of this project is: a) To foster and grow a more inclusive and diverse mathematical community, where students (and staff) from minorities and marginalised groups can feel a stronger sense of belonging
b) To aid lecturers in diversifying the mathematical curriculum to include gender, race and other underrepresented characteristics. In particular, it will: (i) Make the content more relevant to the entire student cohort; (ii) Highlight a wider range of positive role models; (iii) Ensure an inclusive curriculum design with students as co-creators of learning material.
Project outcomes and report due Spring 2027.
