During this academic year, HEFCE, the regulating Council for Higher Education, is implementing a pilot Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) assessment at subject-level on behalf of the Department for Education.

The pilot involves expert panel members reviewing submissions from participating institutions and producing subject-level TEF ratings. It will inform the future development of TEF by testing how ratings could be assigned at subject-level as well as institutional level. This has the potential to provide students with more detailed information to inform their choices of where to study.

The Faculty's departments are spread across three of seven subject categories: medical and health sciences, engineering and technology, and natural sciences.

Competition to be selected for panel membership was very high. Criteria for selection included senior-level responsibility for teaching across at least one subject and knowledge of the diversity of higher education providers.

Dr Alan Hayes said: “I was very pleased to have been appointed to this National role. This is a new innovation for HE and I am looking forward to the challenge. I hope to use the associated training and experience to contribute towards Bath’s Subject TEF submissions at Department, Faculty and Institutional levels.”
